Church service program

Zondag 8 februari
1. Start of the service

When the organ stops playing, the church service begins. The church council enters.

At the front of the church, God’s blessing is sought and there is a moment of
silent prayer. Most of the men stand. Everyone personally asks
God for His blessing.

The service begins with the recitation of the blessing. This blessing is found
in the Bible.

Blessing:
Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth,
who keeps faith forever and never forsakes the works of His
hands. (Bible: Psalm 124:8 and 138:8)
Grace to you and peace from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ,
through the Holy Spirit. Amen.
(Bible: 1 Corinthians 1:3)

To Israel he gave his revelation,
his law as Jacob’s ever-firm foundation,
and all our fathers he, the LORD, commanded
to make it known to those from them descended,
that also they might pass it on in turn
and teach his law to children not yet born.

After the singing, God’s law is read. Here we hear God’s good will. God’s law is found in the Bible (Exodus 20:1-17) and is also called the Ten Commandments.

The Ten Commandments:

Introduction:

Then God spoke all these words, saying:

I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

1. You shall have no other gods before Me.

2. You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

2. You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

3. You shall not bow down to them or serve them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generation of those who hate Me, You shall not bow down to them

or serve them; for I, the LORD your God, am a

jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the

children, upon the third and fourth generations of those who

hate Me; and I will show mercy to thousands of those who

love Me and keep My commandments.

3. You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain; for the

LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.

4. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.

Six days you shall labor and do all your work; but the seventh day

is the Sabbath of the LORD your God; you shall not do any work,

you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your manservant, nor your

maidservant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates

; for in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth,

the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day; therefore

the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.

5. Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the

land which the LORD your God gives you.

6. You shall not murder.

7. You shall not commit adultery.

In antwoord op de wet gaan we weer zingen.

To Israel he gave his revelation,
his law as Jacob’s ever-firm foundation,
and all our fathers he, the LORD, commanded
to make it known to those from them descended,
that also they might pass it on in turn
and teach his law to children not yet born.

13 “Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy[a] that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. 14 For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.

A Tree and Its Fruit

15 “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. 16 You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? 17 So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. 18 A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Thus you will recognize them by their fruits.

I Never Knew You

21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ 23 And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’

Build Your House on the Rock

24 “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. 26 And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”

The Authority of Jesus

28 And when Jesus finished these sayings, the crowds were astonished at his teaching, 29 for he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes.

Praying is talking with God. In prayer, we thank God for who He is, what
He has done, and what He will do. We also ask for His help and blessing for the
service, so that we may get to know and love Him (even more). In prayer,
we also bring our needs and concerns to the Lord. We believe that He is a
Helper in times of need. Sometimes special intercession or thanksgiving is offered.
This is then mentioned before the prayer.

Psalm 61 vers 1

Listen to my cry and hear me;
God, be near me.
In your mercy heed my prayers.
When I call from far-off places,
God, be gracious,
for my heart is faint with cares.

Psalm 61 vers 2

LORD, with your support provide me;
safely guide me
to the rock for me too high.
You, my refuge and my tower,
showed your power
when my enemies drew nigh.

Psalm 61 vers 3

Keep me in your tent forever
Leave me never!
God of grace, to you I cling.
Shield me with your love and favour,
my Saviour,
in the shelter of your wings.

The collection is now being taken.
The deacons will come around with collection bags. Everyone is free to voluntarily
contribute money or vouchers for the service of God. The purpose of the collection will be announced beforehand.

After singing, a sermon is given or read. Usually, the sermon consists of a main theme and a number of sub-themes, also referred to as ‘points’ or ‘thoughts’.
Furthermore, there is singing once or sometimes several times during the sermon.

Furthermore, there is one and sometimes several songs during the sermon,
which is indicated and also mentioned on the digital boards. The sermon
always ends with the word ‘Amen’. This means: it will be true and
certain.

At the end of the service, we thank the Lord God for what He has given
and ask His blessing on what we have heard and sung in church.

Na het dankgebed wordt er weer gezongen. Soms worden er ook nog
mededelingen voor de gemeente doorgegeven.

Psalm 106 vers 3

We, as our fathers did before,
have done what you, O LORD, abhor;
we all are guilty of transgression.
Your chosen ones in Egypt’s land
forgot your kindness and compassion,
ignored the wonders of your hand.

Psalm 91 vers 1

Those dwelling in the hiding place
of God Most High shall tarry
where in the shadow of his grace
his goodness will not vary.
My fortress when I am beset,
my rock – I trust him ever,
for he will from the fowler’s net
his faithful ones deliver.

The service is now almost over. Everyone stands and receives God’s blessing.

Blessing:
The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God the Father and
the comforting fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all, amen.
(Bible: 2 Corinthians 13:13)

After the benediction, the church council is the first to leave the church hall. When the organ begins to play, everyone leaves the church hall.
